Who was Megasthenes? 

Megasthenes was born around 350 BC in the Greek city of Ionia, present-day Turkey. It is believed he was present during the time of Alexander the Great’s invasion of India

Megasthenes’s Journey to India

• In the 4th century, he accompanied the Great Alexander in his campaigns in India in the year 326 BC.
• He was fascinated by the rich culture and civilization, that he decided to stay in India.
• When Alexander died, in 302 BC, Megasthenes was appointed as a diplomat by Seleucus I Nicator, one of the generals of Alexander the Great, following the Seleucid-Mauryan War.
• His assignment was to establish diplomatic relationships with the powerful Maurya Empire, ruled by Chandragupta Maurya.
• Megasthenes embarked on a challenging journey, travelling through the treacherous terrains and enduring harsh climates, to reach Pataliputra, the capital of the Maurya Empire.
• He spent several years understanding and documenting the customs, traditions and political system prevalent in India.

Work and Contributions of Megasthenes

Megasthese covered a wide overview of the prevailing daily routine, the social structure and administration in his writings. Some of his famous works include – 

• Indica: Megasthenes’ Magnum Opus
  • Megasthenes documented his experiences and observations in a masterpiece called “Indica.”
  • This work provides a detailed account of the socio-cultural, political, and economic aspects of ancient India.
  • Divided into four books, Indica covers a wide range of topics, including geography, history, social structure, government, and culture.

He mentions more about the geographical textures like major rivers, climate, different regions of India, etc. Also commented about the flora and fauna giving descriptions of elephants, tigers, monkeys and natural flowers. However, there are speculations of even his visit to the land and some claim him to be a liar to write Indica.
