Founder and Teachings
Siddhartha Gautam was born in Lumbini, Nepal in the 6th century. He was born into a royal family and lived a life of luxury and privilege, but after he witnessed the suffering in the world, he at the age of 29, renounced his house in search of his quest for truth and questions.
- After years of meditation and self-reflection, Siddhartha achieved enlightenment.
- He received the enlightenment under a Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India.
- It was a this moment that Siddhartha became the Buddha, which means “the awakened one”.
- The Buddha’s teachings revolve around the Four Noble Truths: the truth of suffering, the truth of the cause of suffering, the truth of the end of suffering, and the truth of the path that leads to the end of suffering.
- He also taught the Eightfold Path, which is a set of guidelines for living a more mindful and compassionate life.
- The core principles of Buddhism include the importance of mindfulness, compassion and non-attachment to material possessions.
Gautama Buddha delivered his initial sermon at Sarnath, and it is referred to as ‘Dharmachakrapravartana,’ which translates to “turning the wheel of the law.” He devoted the remainder of his life to travelling and teaching until his passing in Kusinara.

The Spread of Buddhism
After attaining enlightenment, the Buddha spent the rest of his life travelling throughout India. He taught his followers and spread his message of compassion and wisdom. His teachings gained a large following and after his death, his disciples continued to spread the teachings of Buddhism throughout Asia and eventually in the rest of the world.
