The Formation of Brahmo Samaj
In 1828, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, along with like-minded individuals such as Debendranath Tagore formed Brahmo Samaj in Kolkata. The primary objective of this socio-religious movement was to promote monotheism, rationality and social reform within the Hindu community. It sought to create a more inclusive and progressive society by challenging orthodox beliefs and practices.
- Raja Rammohan Roy: Raja Rammohan Roy also hailed as the “Father of Modern India,” was a trailblazer in advocating for social reforms and religious tolerance. His knowledge of Sanskrit and Persian literature, combined with a deep understanding of Western philosophy, gave rise to Brahmo Sabha (later named Brahmo Samaj).
- Debendranath Tagore: Debendranath Tagore, an eminent philosopher and poet. He was the father of Rabindranath Tagore and later joined Raja Rammohan Roy as the leader of Brahmo Samaj in 1842. Under his leadership, the movement gained momentum and attracted a dedicated following of intellectuals and social reformers.
Other thinkers who joined the forces of the sabha were Keshab Chandra Sen, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Derozians, etc.
