The first Swadeshi bank in India, the Punjab National Bank (PNB), began operations on April 12, 1895, in Lahore with a working capital of 20,000 and authorised capital of 2 lac. This Bank was the first bank solely run by Indians with Indian capital, and it was founded in the spirit of nationalism.

Indian banker and advocate for progressive and social reform initiatives in Punjab, Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia. In 1881, he founded The Tribune, an English-language newspaper in Lahore. Later on, he continued to serve as founding chairman of the Punjab National Bank, which was founded in 1894.
