What is UNFCCC?
The first conference on the global level for climate change was held in 1972 in Stockholm, Sweden. The conference pointed out numerous negotiations about climatic conditions and called for a shared international agreement on environmental issues.
All these agreements and negotiations led to the formation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Rio De Janeiro in Brazil in 1992 but came into force in the year 1994. The goal of UNFCCC is to stabilize the greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system.

What are the Main Objectives of the UNFCCC?
The main objectives and goals of the UNFCCC are –
- Stabilizing Greenhouse Gas Concentration – This goal involves reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing the natural sinks for these gases.
- Promote Sustainable Development Goals – The UNFCCC has pointed out the need to move towards climate action that should be sustainable for the generation to come.
- Individual Responsibility – The treaty also has set an objective to look after the usage and responsibility of individual countries in contributing towards the concentration of greenhouse gases.
- Education and public awareness -The convention also tries to encourage countries to raise public awareness about the impact of climate change and how can people contribute to sustainable development.

Important UNFCCC conference
The UNFCCC is held every year and the annual conferences are called “Conference of Parties (COP)”. Some of the most important COPs held are –
- COP 3 – Kyoto in 1993
- COP 15 – Copenhagen in 2009
- COP 21 – Paris in 2015
- COP 26 – Glasgow in 2021
India has been a signatory to the Convention since 1993 and has set a target of achieving net zero emissions by 2070.
