It is a telecommunication service provider that operates under the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, Government of the Republic of India. - The first telegraph connection in India was established by the East India Company (EIC) in 1850. This connection line was laid down between Diamond Harbour and the city of Calcutta to ease communication.
- The EIC started using this telegraph line in 1851.
- Further, the telegraph line was installed across the nation in 1854.
- Furthermore, the EIC opened the telegraph line for public use in 1854 and the first telegram in India was delivered in the same year between Mumbai to Pune.
- Finally, in 1885, the Imperial Legislative Council of British India approved the Indian Telegraph Act. With this act, the British government got permission to set up, operate, maintain, and provide licenses for laying communication lines and offering communication services in India.
- All the communication lines remained intact in independent India and many more telecom lines were laid down after 1947.
- It was in 1980, that the foundation of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited was established by the Department of Telecommunications, which was formed after dividing the Postal and Telegraph Department of the central government.
