The National Commission for Women is a statutory body that was set up on the 31st of January 1992. The Commission was formed under the National Commission for Women Act, 1990. Moreover, it was formed to work for the welfare of women in terms of economic empowerment of women. Additionally, the Commission took a year to travel throughout India, all States, and Union territories and prepare a document to asses the grounds of the empowerment of women. Since then, it has been acting as suo-moto in several cases and has gotten a large number of complaints. The current Chairwoman of the Commission is Rekha Sharma since the 7th of August, 2018. How many Members are in the National Women’s Commission?
The National Commission for Women consists of a chairwoman, 5 members, and a member secretary.
- The Central Government of India nominates the chairwoman of the Commission.
- In addition, women with experience in law or legislation, trade unionism, management of an industry potential of women, women’s voluntary organizations (including women activists), administration, economic development, health, education, or social welfare are chosen to be the 5 members of the commission.
Furthermore, the Central Government nominates the member-secretary of the Commission, who must be a:
- Management, organizational structure, or sociology movement expert.
- Civil Service of the Union or an all-India service or Civil post holding officer.

What are the Functions of the National Women’s Commission?
Consequently, the Functions of the National Women’s Commission are as follows:
