The Vice President (VP) of India occupies the second-highest office in the country. Moreover, these offices are nominal, along with the President of India. Process of Appointment of the Vice President of India

The voting of the Vice President is done through the process of Proportional Representation. Elections using a form of voting known as Proportional representation see party-awarded seats as per the number of votes they receive.

  • The voting process for the Vice President is held through a secret ballot.
  • Members of both Houses of Parliament make up the Electoral College, which elects the Vice President of India.
  • While the nominated members of both Houses cannot vote in the presidential elections, they can do the same in the election of the Vice President.
  • Additionally, the members of both houses either elected or nominated cast their vote for the Appointment of Vice President. 

The Rajya Sabha has 233 members and 12 nominated ones. Moreover, the Lok Sabha has 543 MPs and 2 nominated members.

Furthermore, the eligibility criteria to be kept in mind for a VP candidate is as follows:

  • Indian Citizen
  • 35 years of age
  • Qualified election as a member of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha)
