History, Affiliations, and Rankings
University of Potsdam (UP) is a public research university in Germany, which was established in 1991. It is located in the Federal State of Brandenburg. With a total strength of more than 20,000 students, it is the largest university in the State. The University of Potsdam is ranked #479 in Best Global Universities. It also ranked 701–750 by QS World University Ranking 2022, 251-300 by Times Higher Education (THE) 2022– World University Ranking, 28 by THE Young University Ranking 2022, 401 –500 by Shanghai Ranking (ARWU) 2019, 3 by Start-up Radar 2018, 11 by Humboldt-Ranking 2017.
Infrastructure, Campuses, and the Courses
The Faculty of Arts is located on the Am Neuen Palais campus, which is next to Sanssouci Park. The Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Human Sciences is located in rural Golm, where one of the biggest science parks in the area has grown. Both the Law Faculty and the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences are located in Griebnitzsee. In 1991, the University of Potsdam was newly established—organizationally, legally, and in terms of its curriculum—but its buildings were already there. During the early years, several of the listed buildings had major renovations, but over the past 10 years, many new structures have been built. The University of Potsdam offers various Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral courses in German as well as the English language. It also offers international degree programs. At present, more than 25 international Master’s degree programs are offered at the university out of which 18 programs are offered in English. The courses are offered under seven faculties namely the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, Faculty of Science, Digital Engineering Faculty, and Faculty of Health Sciences.

Potsdam has more than 40 academic research institutions and is located in the vibrant metropolitan city of Brandenburg. Some notable alumni of the University of Potsdam are Hubertus Heil – Federal Minister of Labor and Social Affairs in the fourth cabinet of Chancellor Angela Merkel, Svenja Jung – German actress, Franziska Weber –German sprint canoer, Abraham Taherivand – German computer scientist and board member of Wikimedia Germany.
