History, Affiliations and Rankings

Also known as the University of Studies of Milan, the University of Milan is one of the largest universities in Europe and was established in 1924. It was formed as a result of the merger of two institutions that boasted a great tradition of medical, scientific and humanistic studies: the Accademia Scientifico-Letterario (Scientific-Literary Academy), active since 1861, and the Istituti Clinici di Perfezionamento (Clinical Specialization Institutes), established in 1906. By 1928, the University already had the fourth-highest number of enrolled students in Italy, after the University of Naples, Sapienza University of Rome and the University of Padua. The University of Milan was academically affiliated with EUA and LERU, while its sports team competes at CUS Milano. 

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

The university offers a highly stimulating and dynamic range of 76 undergraduate and 60 postgraduate courses; 32 doctoral level programmes, 77 vocational master’s degrees and comprises a total of 62 specialization schools. There is also the availability of a wide range of degree programs in English. UNIMI is home to 10 faculties and schools with about 2,200 teaching staff and a wide variety of disciplinary fields: School of Humanities, School of Exercise and Sports Sciences, School of Pharmacy, School of Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine, School of Law, School of Political Economic and Social Sciences,  School of Agricultural and Food Sciences, School of Science and Technology, School of Language Mediation and Intercultural Communication being one of the top international institutions in terms of scientific productivity, research activities are organized in the university in 33 departments and 52 research centers catering to the socio-economic development of the country.

Accomplishments and Alumni 

With the advancement in technology and research activities, the university has received important international recognition over the years and has been consistently ranked among the best universities in Italy. UNIMI is the only Italian member of the League of European Research Universities, a set of 21 intensive-research European universities.  Other than this, the University’s choir and orchestra are also internationally recognised. The University of Milan also has over 1300 international agreements. A number of notable alumni are associated with University of Milan, these include but are not limited to Riccardo Giaccon(Nobel Laureate in Physics), Enrico Bombieri(Fields Medalist), Bettino Craxi and Silvio Berlusconi(Former Prime Ministers) and Giorgio Armani(Stylist). 

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

University of Milan also consists of an international student body and provides them a plethora of opportunities and benefits. These include the Excellence Scholarships, which range from a fee waiver to total fee exemption. Moreover, about 619 residences are provided for non-residential students. The companies that recruit graduates from University of Milan include but are not limited to the likes of Accenture, PwC Italy, Amazon, Deloitte and Google.
