History, Affiliations and Rankings

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is the state's public health, law, and human services university, dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, clinical care, and public service. It was founded in 1807. The College of Medicine was founded by the Maryland General Assembly and is now the country's oldest public medical school. The Maryland General Assembly renamed the College of Medicine the University of Maryland in 1812, broadening its mission. Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA) and Space-grant have academic affiliations with the university. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education has granted it regional accreditation (MSCHE). The Middle States Commission on Higher Education is a U.S. Department of Education and Council for Higher Education Accreditation-approved university accrediting agency. The University of Maryland, Baltimore is ranked #751-800 in the QS US University Ranking 2022. The Times Higher Education positioned UMB in the bracket #601-800th in the World University Rankings 2022. 

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

Located in Baltimore, the campus consists of 65 acres with 6.5 million gross square feet of space in 55 buildings. The Community Campus at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is the centerpiece of UMB's significant commitment to West Baltimore and the engagement with community partners and neighbors that will improve it. The UMB Community Campus, located immediately west of the University, provides direct health, employment, legal, educational, and social services to neighboring communities, as well as work on neighborhood-strengthening advocacy projects. The university provides 86 doctorate, master's, baccalaureate, and certificate programs and awards the majority of Maryland's professional practice doctoral degrees.

Accomplishments and Alumni 

UMB is a prominent academic health facility that offers cutting-edge biomedical research as well as excellent patient care. In Fiscal Year 2021, UMB received $682 million in extramural funding, with each tenured/tenure-track faculty member bringing in an average of $1.5 million in research grants per year. UMB and the University of Maryland, College Park were ranked No. 8 among public universities in the National Science Foundation's Higher Education Research and Development survey for FY19, with combined research expenditures of $1.1 billion. More than 17,000 jobs are created as a result of it. The University has a prestigious network of 80,000+ alumni all over the world. Some of the notable names are Millard Tydings, Former senator of the United States, Wendy R. Sherman, United States Deputy Secretary of State and Paul A. Offit, American Paediatrician.

The ethnic community at the university comprises of Hispanic/Latino is 10.9%, American Indian/Alaska Native is 0.2%, Asian is 16.4%, Black or African American is 23.9%, White is 39.1%, Two or more races is 4.7% and Race and ethnicity unknown is 1.2%. The Career Centre empowers undergraduate and graduate students to actively explore, experience, and succeed in their future careers.
