History, Affiliations, and Rankings

The origins of the University of Florence date back to the Studium Generale set up by the Florentine Republic in 1321. The subjects taught were Civil and Canon Law, Literature, and Medicine. Charles VIII relocated it from 1497 to 1515, but it was returned to Pisa when the Medici family reclaimed power. The contemporary university dates from 1859, when a number of separate higher-education institutions merged to form the Istituto di Studi Pratici e di Perfezionamento, which was acknowledged as a full-fledged university a year later by the newly unified Italian government.
