About the University

History, Affiliations, and Rankings

The origins of the University of Florence date back to the Studium Generale set up by the Florentine Republic in 1321. The subjects taught were Civil and Canon Law, Literature, and Medicine. In 1349, Pope Clement VI recognised the Studium and permitted it to give regular degrees. The Pope also established Florence as the location of the first Italian theological faculty. The Studium became an imperial university in 1364 but was relocated to Pisa after Lorenzo the Magnificent took control of Florence in 1473. Charles VIII relocated it from 1497 to 1515, but it was returned to Pisa when the Medici family reclaimed power. The contemporary university dates from 1859, when a number of separate higher-education institutions merged to form the Istituto di Studi Pratici e di Perfezionamento, which was acknowledged as a full-fledged university a year later by the newly unified Italian government. The Italian Parliament officially designated the Istituto as a university in 1923. There have been illustrious scholars such as Giovanni Boccaccio, who lectured on the Divina Commedia. Its affiliation is with EUA and CAESAR. The University of Florence is ranked #240 in Best Global Universities.
