Griffith University was formally founded in 1971 and opened its doors in 1975, introducing Australia's first degrees in environmental science and Asian studies. The university is named after Sir Samuel Walker Griffith, who was twice Premier of Queensland and the first Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia. Sir Samuel Griffith played a major role in the Federation of Australia and was the principal author of the Australian constitution. The University is affiliated with ACU, ASAIHL and IRU and Griffith University’s Postgraduate Students Association is a constituent member of the Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations. This university has been ranked in the top 2% of universities across the globe. According to QS World University Rankings, the university is ranked #290 in the year 2022 and #300 in the year 2023 and between #201-250 as per Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022 and #251-300 as per Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023. Furthermore, the university is ranked #201 in the latest U.S. News Best Global Universities Rankings 2022 and #203 in the latest U.S. News Best Global Universities Rankings 2023

Griffith University has five campuses. These five physical campuses are spread throughout three cities in South East Queensland: the Gold Coast, Logan, Mt Gravatt, Nathan, and South Bank. The university's digital campus is accessible from anywhere in the world.
