History, Affiliations and Rankings
Arts University Plymouth was established in 1856 in Plymouth, the United Kingdom as the city's first speciality art and design institution. Plymouth School of Creative Arts, a city-centre free school for children aged 4 to 16, was formed by the college in 2013. The College was recently designated as the Art University Plymouth. The school and college have collaborated to create a radical and progressive continuum of creative learning and practice in the region that spans early childhood to master's level study. The Awarding Organisations have granted Arts University Plymouth accreditation to provide qualifications-based programmes. University of the Arts London, OCR (Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examinations), Pearson, City and Guilds, ABC Awards, Trinity College London, and AQA (Assessment and Qualifications Alliance) are some of the affiliations. The university has received many honours and international recognition from world-renowned institutions.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
Professional workspaces and state-of-the-art facilities abound in the university's 13,000 square metres of studios and workshops spread across four buildings. Their city-centre campus is a flourishing creative hub of cooperation and invention, thinking and making, and is home to a 2,000-strong community of student artists, designers, and makers. It's a close-knit community where artists, designers, and makers get together to investigate and experiment with both contemporary and traditional procedures and materials. The University specialises in art, design, crafts, and media and offers creative education at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and pre-degree levels. Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is one of the pre-degree courses available.
Accomplishments and Alumni
Melting Pot, an international glass blowing symposium, was held at Art University, as part of the United Kingdom's national celebrations for the United Nations-designated International Year of Glass. Based on the institution's active adoption of sustainability best practices, the college has been shortlisted for the CSR/Sustainability Transformation Award at this year's international Think Global Awards. Barnaby's Brewhouse is collaborating with Plymouth College of Art and Fab Lab Plymouth on a method to minimise and reuse CO2 emissions from their beer production facilities as part of the Environmental Futures and Big Data Impact Lab project. The list of achievements of the University is unending. The University has a prestigious network of graduates working in different sectors all around the world. Malcolm Le Grice, a Film director; Harry Borden, a British photographer and David McKee, a British writer are among the noteworthy names of the college.
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
The university's student body is made up of 97% full-time students while the remaining students are enrolled in part-time courses. Students from all over the world are welcome at the College. International students make up about 3% of the University's student body. The College provides students with the opportunity to embark on a challenging journey of self-awareness, professional development, and business planning in order to prepare them to use their creative practice as a springboard to lifelong fulfilment and an exciting career in the creative industries on a local, regional, national, or international level.
