The University of Portsmouth, previously known as Portsmouth Polytechnic, is an English public university located in the city of Portsmouth in UK. The University's origins may be traced back to the subscription-funded Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and Art, which opened in 1870. The name of the college was changed to Portsmouth College of Technology in 1953. After gaining university status in 1969, the institution was renamed Portsmouth Polytechnic, and by the late 1980s, it was one of the largest polytechnics in the United Kingdom. Finally, it was on 7 July 1992 when the inauguration of the University of Portsmouth was celebrated at a ceremony at Portsmouth Guildhall. The university is also a member of the University Alliance and the Channels Islands Universities Consortium. The University Quarter, which is centred on the Portsmouth Guildhall area, and the Langstone Campus are the 2 campuses that make up the University of Portsmouth. Langstone is the smaller of the two campuses and is located near Milton on Portsea Island's eastern side while the University Quarter is a collection of university buildings distributed around the city. Most of the university's teaching facilities, as well as all of the Student Halls of Residence and the university's historic library, are located in this neighbourhood. The University of Portsmouth is composed of 5 faculties divided into 29 departments. The university also has over 200 undergraduate courses, 150 postgraduate courses, 65 research degree programmes and many other courses in a plethora of different fields of study such as Accounting, Economics and Finance, Architecture, Biological Sciences, Business and Management, Criminology, Engineering, Law, Sport Science and many more that are tailored for students of different interests.
