The course is a collaboration between the Department of Computer Science and the university’s Good Systems program. It will commence in the fall semester, beginning the week of August 21. This one-semester-credit-hour course is designed to enhance AI literacy among students. Also, covers both the fundamentals of AI technology and its ethical and societal implications. The system is open to all UT Austin students, faculty, and staff, regardless of their primary or technical background. Additionally does not require any prior programming skills or technical knowledge.
The curriculum will be divided into two main parts. The initial segment will introduce participants to AI and machine learning, elucidating key methodologies, paradigms, and application areas. These will include natural language processing, computer vision, and robotics. The latter portion of the course will delve into the broader societal impacts of AI. Including its effects on the workforce, the proliferation of misinformation, challenges to democratic processes, and potential benefits.
The course’s hybrid format includes a weekly synchronous lecture held on Wednesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. Moreover, in this students can attend in person or virtually. Each week, students will engage with assigned readings, interactive lectures, and short assessments. The course allows participants to choose between a letter-grade assessment or a pass/fail option.
Advancement of AI Technology
UT Austin’s proactive approach to AI education stems from the realization that artificial intelligence is poised to significantly impact numerous aspects of society. As AI technologies continue to advance and become more accessible, the university aims to equip its students with a solid understanding of AI’s capabilities, potential risks, and ethical considerations.
The goal of the course is to empower students with the ability to discern between realistic AI applications and science fiction, enabling them to make informed decisions in their careers and contribute to public discussions regarding the societal response to these technologies. With AI’s increasing integration into our lives, this course seeks to foster a well-rounded perspective that goes beyond technical aspects, emphasizing the importance of ethical and societal considerations.
