Study in UK: Rise in Study Visas Granted to Indian Students Till June 2023

Indian students willing to study in the UK accounted for one-third of study grants. The approvals have significantly increased in the fiscal year ending from June 2019. The UK has remained a popular study destination for international students. 

In total, 32,87,404 visas were issued in the year ending June 2023. However, which is 58% more than the year June 2022, according to official data from the UK home office. Additionally, in the fiscal year that ends in June 2023, 498,626 sponsored study visas were issued to primary applicants. With an increase in 23% from the fiscal year that ends in June 2022.

A total of 142,848 study visas were issued to Indian citizens, up 49,883 (+54%) over the previous fiscal year that concluded in June 2022. Grants for students who are Indian citizens have grown dramatically since the fiscal year of June 2019. Additionally, around seven times bigger.

UK Study Grants For International Students

Chinese students were the second most popular nationality to get sponsored study visas in the fiscal year of June 2023. There are around 107,670 approved visas.

91% of Certificates of Acceptance (CAS) were utilised for supported study at institutes of higher learning (universities), with the total being split between:

  • Higher education is 91%
  • Tertiary and further education and other colleges are 4%
  • English language schools are 2%
  • Other is 1% 

Moreover, nearly 24% (154,063) of all sponsored study-related visas were issued to students. Also, a significant rise in dependents number from 17% (80,846) in the year June 2022.

Applications for sponsored study visas include the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). When a candidate gets a response to their visa application, a CAS is deemed to have been “used.” As of October 5, 2020 position of student visa was replaced by the Tier 4 (General) Student visa. It offers a way for students who are 16 years old or older to study in the UK with a recognised educational institution.
