Over the years, the number of Indian students undertaking the TOEFL test to pursue a higher education abroad has increased. The number has jumped from 5.83% in 2021 to 7.77% in 2022 and by the end of year 2023, we are going to have a new record to break. This shows a 59% growth in statistics.

Indians being from non-native English-speaking countries have to take any of the English proficiency tests to be eligible for education in native English-speaking countries. Moreover, TOEFL is one of the most widely accepted English proficiency tests that allow students to prove their proficiency in English. Also, more than 12,000 colleges and universities accept its scores.

This provision has allowed Indian students to study abroad in the best countries for study abroad like the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and many more. Observing the past trends it is evident that the number of Indian students opting for TOEFL for studying abroad is increasing year after year.

Each year, the number of Indian students opting for TOEFL is growing, however, there can be many reasons contributing to this increase. Let’s look at some of the most relevant ones.   

  1. The number of Indian students studying abroad has increased. As more students plan to go abroad, the test will naturally have more numbers. Additionally, the estimated number of Indians going to study abroad in the next 2-3 years is 2.5 million.
  2. Awareness about the test has increased. TOEFL derives most of its essays and excerpts from academic material, making it an academic-centric test. The test is particularly designed to target university students and education and hence the students are inclined towards it. 
  3. Growing acceptance. Each year more and more universities are accepting TOEFL scores. Further expanding the options of tests for English proficiency for the students. In short, TOEFL is getting more universal significance and acceptance.  
  4. TOEFL has got shotter! Yes, TOEFL tasks, questions and time duration have been reduced. The test can now be completed in less than two hours. This makes it a more feasible option for the students. 
  5. TOEFL offers test centres in every state with accommodation options and has also launched the option of TOEFL home edition. All these factors together make TOEFL a perfect choice for an Indian student.
