5 new rules for international students in Canada for 2024 are listed below:

  • Increase in the Cost of Living: Candidates now require $20635 to manage their cost of living. In addition to this, the candidates should also have their first year’s tuition and travel expenses for study permits in Canada. This came into effect from 1st January, 2024. In case the family members are accompanying the students then the funds:

  • Cap on the Number of International Students Coming to Canada: Canada has recently introduced a cap on the visas of international students which has resulted in a decrease in the number of permits by 35%. However, there are a few exemptions to this cap such as:
    • New study permit applications or extensions from within Canada are not included in this cap
    • Study permit applications to study at a primary school or secondary school are not included
    • Study permit applications to study in a graduate degree program at the master’s or doctorate level are also not included
  • Requirement of New Provincial Attestation Letter: Study permit applications submitted after 8:30 AM on 22nd January are required to provide a provincial attestation letter from the province or territory they are planning to study. PAL is not required for new study permit applications if the candidates are applying:
    • To study in a preschool, primary school, or secondary school
    • To study for a master’s degree or doctoral degree
    • To extend study permit from within Canada
  • Change in the Eligibility Criteria for Spousal Open Work Permit: As per the change open work permit will only be offered to the spouses of international students pursuing master’s and doctorate degrees.
  • New Eligibility Criteria for Post-Graduation Work Permit: From 15th February 2024, onwards candidates who complete a master’s degree in less than 2 years and meet all the other PGWP eligibility criteria will be eligible for a three-year post-graduation work permit.
