Number of Examination Registrations For The NEWL Exams Skyrocket
NEWL exam is the National Examinations in World Languages for four global languages deemed critical and important by the American Council: Portuguese, Arabic, Korean, and Russian which is having larger demands.

The year 2023 saw an increase in the number of applications for the NEWL exams or the National examinations in the world languages. Numerous students registered for the NEWL exams. In just 9 days, 577 students registered for the examination. As per  João Caixinha, the Coordinator for the Portuguese Language Programs and Education Affairs in the USA (CEPE-EUA), Portuguese is one of the leading languages covered by the students. 

The NEWL exams allow college students to earn placements or credits based on their language proficiency. 31st March is the deadline for registration for the NEWL exam 2023.  

What are NEWL exams?

The American Council for International Education conducts the NEWL exam. The exam tests the proficiency of the students in four main languages. Portuguese, Arabic, Korean, and Russian are the main languages. The exam aims at secondary school foreign language students.

The NEWL exam assesses the interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational level of communication of the candidate. The exam has four categories. reading comprehension, listening comprehension, integrated speaking, and integrated writing section.

To take the NEWL 2023 exam a student must have turned 14 years of age. Ideally, he/she should be in 9th grade or above.  On 26th April 2023, the Portuguese exam will be held.

The registration fee would be $97 (INR 8,019). To register, candidates can visit the official website.

Scholarships

The Luso American Development Foundation (FLAD) and the Camões Institute of Portugal are providing scholarships for interested students. The scholarship amount is EUR 8,000. Portuguese students will have 87 scholarships. The scholarships will be distributed on a first-come and first-served basis. 

Due to the scholarships provided, it is expected that the number of students registering for the exam will increase. To prepare for the NEWL exam students can study culturally authentic materials. It includes communications, websites, news reports, and TV shows. It will expose the students to their native language and will help them to score well.
