The Albanese Government in Australia has committed to a national skills agreement with the states to address Australia’s critical skill needs. As the country is facing productivity and economic challenges workers in health care, professional fields, scientific and technical services as well as education are in demand.

These professions require university training and are also among the fastest-growing jobs in Australia. Universities, vocational education and training providers are to come together to address the skill shortage issues.

Harnessing the Skills of International Students

As the number of students choosing to study in Australia is growing with each passing year, Australia is set with a new migration strategy to harness their skills. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, nearly 50,000 foreign students arrived in Australia this August.

Furthermore, this massive influx of students entering Australia would benefit the country more if they stayed to plug in the skill gaps in the country. Universities Australia Chief Executive Catriona Jackson said that this could stabilize their economic growth.

Only 28% of international students in Australia exercise their post-study work rights and only 16% seek permanent residence in Australia. The government is planning to introduce initiatives that would increase these statistics. This will help them retain more graduates and postgraduates to work in Australia.

Students must note that based on the current policies Australia does not offer many slots for permanent residency. Nevertheless, the country is looking to open up to more such opportunities for foreign students.
