Lithuania is a desirable study-abroad destination due to its internationally renowned institutions, affordable tuition fees, and high quality of life. Lithuania is a part of the Schengen area. Hence, the country does not have a post-study work visa. However, international students can stay back in the country for  12 months to seek employment with a residence permit. Lithuania Post Study Work Visa for EU Students

EU nationals are not required to present any documentation for studying in Lithuania. They can stay in the country for 3 months without a residence permit. After completing 3 months of stay, EU nationals will have to apply for a temporary residence permit. This residence permit is valid for 5 years and costs approximately €8.6. To apply for a residence permit, the EU national would have to present a valid travel document, proof of acceptance to a Lithuanian educational institution, proof of sufficient funds, and health insurance. A residence permit will be granted within 1 month of application. Hence, for the EU nationals the Lithuania post study work visa is neither applicable nor available.

Lithuania Post Study Work Visa for Non-EU Students 

The non-EU students coming to Lithuania for studies need to obtain a Nationa Student visa or D visa.  Those who want to stay for longer than 1 year need to apply for a temporary residence permit or TRP. The TRP is renewable and is issued for a maximum period of 2 years. Generally, an application for a TRP is processed in 3 months. A fast-track procedure can take up to 45 days.  A temporary residence permit can be issued or renewed for the final year of study of the student.  After the completion of studies in Lithuania, students have 2 options:

  • Apply for a temporary residence permit (TRP) or renew the TRP: TRP renewal is given for 3 months. During this time, the international student can work full-time. 
  • Apply for a temporary residence permit that is valid for 12 months: During this period, the non-EU student can seek employment, or work as a self-employed person. The permit allows the former student to start working immediately after getting a job. 

After staying in Lithuania for a year, the student must submit for a change of residence permit or issue a new residence permit. The application for the same can be sent via the Lithuanian Migration Information System MIGRIS.

Documents Required for a Lithuania Post Study Work Visa 

As mentioned before, a Lithuania post study work visa doesn’t exist. However, non-EU students can apply for a residence permit. This residence permit is valid for 1 year, The application for a residence permit can be applied via  Lithuanian Migration Information System ( MIGRIS ). During the application process, the student will have to upload digital copies of the following documents.  The application for a residence permit must be sent within 10 years of completing the studies.

  • A passport or a valid travel document
  • Application form for issuance of a temporary residence permit 
  • The mediation letter submitted by the employer (the median letter explains whether the employment contract has been made with a foreigner). The employer must make sure that the student has submitted proof of completion of education or training in Lituania  
  • The foreigner’s promise or declaration stating the residence of the foreigner is at least 7 square meters
  • The living area requirement is not applicable if a person is in a job that requires constant international travel or working in another EU or EFTA member state under a contract for the provision of services or performance of work in the member stay during the duration of stay
  • Provide a certificate of non-conviction. If the applicant has been convicted, the conviction certificate must include what crime the applicant has been convicted and what sentence was imposed on him/her 

Application Process for a Lithuania Post Study Work Visa

The Lituania Post Study Work Visa application can be filled out online by visiting the  Lithuanian Migration Information System ( MIGRIS ). The digital copies of the documents must be attached to the application. After completing the application and securing the visit time through MIGRIS (within 4 months from the date of filling out the application form), the applicant must personally apply for the issuance or change of a temporary residence permit. The biometric data and original documents must be submitted for the purpose. It is important to note that the state fees must be paid for issuing the temporary residence permit.

When to Apply for a Change of the Existing TRP? 

The Lithuania TRP can be changed by applying 1 working day before the expiry of the existing temporary residence permit. The change of residency status cannot be applied 4 months before the expiry of the TRP.

Is it Possible to Change the Employer or Job Function on a Temporary Residence Permit? 

Those who have obtained the temporary residence permit can only work for the employer who has committed to employ the applicant. However, to change the employer or the job function, the applicant must apply to the territorial department of the Migration Department to receive the permission of the permission of the central office of the Migration Department.

The Lithuania post study work visa or the temporary residence permit is given for a maximum duration of 2 years. A residence permit will not be issued longer than 2 years. 

New Rules for International Students in Lithuania

On March 1st, 2021, new rules have been introduced for international students in Lithuania. Under this, 3 changes have been made. These are: 

  • Masters students (Non-EU) can work full-time during their studies. That is 40/hours per week. It means just like the locals, they will be able to join the job market. 
  • Next, a temporary residence permit is given to non-EU students after their graduation. It will hep international students seek employment opportunities or be self-employed right after getting a job, No additional permit is needed to work. 
  • Lastly, the non-EU students must declare their residence in Lithuania within 1 month of receiving the residence permit.

Can I stay in Lithuania after my studies?

Yes. It is possible to stay in Lithuania after completion of studies. The non-EU student can apply for a temporary residence permit or TRP. A TRP will be given for 12 months to a student. During this period, the student can look for employment opportunities, or work as a self-employed person.
