- Students cannot nominate themselves; a doctoral faculty member must nominate them.
- Must be enrolled full-time in a PhD program during the grant year or forfeit the fellowship.
- They must have two years left in their program at the time of nomination to apply for the fellowship to the final year of study.
- They are not eligible for the program if they are from embargoed countries or attend institutions in embargoed countries.
- They are ineligible for this award if they are receiving a comparable fellowship, internship, or support from another company or institution (except academic scholarships) during the IBM PhD Fellowship funding period.
- Must remain in the same program for the duration of the award — no transferring of departments or schools.
