The Objective of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme

Research Grants Council introduced the fellowship scheme to encourage the brightest minds from all over the world to pursue their PhDs at the esteemed universities of Hong Kong. The objective of the Hong Kong PhD fellowship scheme is to enable talented students with excellent potential, communication skills, research abilities and leadership qualities to study at the top universities of Hong Kong. This program allows students to study at the university of their own choice from the eight listed universities of the RGC.

The following are the eight universities offering this fellowship:

• The Chinese University of Hong Kong
• The Education University of Hong Kong
• City University of Hong Kong
• Hong Kong Baptist University
• Lingnan University
• The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
• The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
• The University of Hong Kong

Eligibility Criteria of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme

The following are the eligibility criteria to apply for this fellowship scheme:

• Candidates must be new admissions pursuing a full-time PhD program.
• If the candidate is not a new admission then they can apply only if they get admission to other full-time PhD programmes
• The application requirement is non-restrictive and allows students of all nationalities, ethnic backgrounds and religious and political affinities to apply for it.
• They are required to provide proof of their university education was taught in English. If not, they would be required to provide an English language proficiency certificate.
• The candidate can select one from the eight lifted universities to study in 

Application Process

The following are the steps to apply for this fellowship:

• All candidates would be required to apply separately at the university and the fellowship program
• The candidate must first apply for the fellowship
• To apply for the fellowship, the candidate would have to complete the initial application process through the electronic system Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme Electronic System (HKPFSES)
• Once the candidate submits the initial application, they will receive a reference number to proceed further
• Using the reference number, the candidate can apply for up to two universities and two programs (based on priority). The reference number must be mentioned in the university application form.
• As every university has a different application deadline, it is advised to get your reference number by filling out the initial application form as soon as possible.

Note: In case a candidate forgets to mention the reference number on the application, it will be considered on a regular basis and will not be considered for the fellowship.

Benefits of Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme

The following are the benefits of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship scheme:

• The fellowship is a chance for students to receive a stipend of HKD 322,800 for the duration of three years
• It also covers travel expenses of KHD 13,500 annually for various events such as conferences and research-related relocation
• In case the PhD research exceeds more than three years, the university will provide the additional support
• Furthermore, it does not have any restriction on the prior work experience
