Max Weber

Max Weber, Father of Modern Sociology

A well-known German political economist and sociologist, Max Weber, studied law and history at Heidelberg University, where he achieved his doctorate in 1889. Otto Frank was the father of Anne Frank who studied art history at Heidelberg University for a semester in 1908. At the German university, he befriended Nathan Straus Jr., an American student, who later had an important part in obtaining visas for his family to escape from Nazi-occupied Europe. Furthermore, in 1948 he edited and published the first edition of Anne Frank’s diary, The Diary of a Young Girl, which is even a part of school education

William Somerset Maugham was an English writer, who studied literature, philosophy, and the German language at Heidelberg University from 1891 to 1892. His literary life began in Heidelberg which led him to write his first unpublished book which was a biography of composer Giacomo Meyerbeer. Of Human Bondage is Maugham’s most famous work that is critically acclaimed. 

Philipp Melanchthon

Philipp Melanchthon, theologian

A famous personality of the Protestant Reformation, Philipp Melanchthon, completed his degree in the arts in 1511 at Heidelberg University. He studied ancient languages and humanism which influenced his reformative work in education and theology. Melanchthon’s legacy as a scholar and educator got him the title of “Praeceptor Germaniae” which translates to ‘Teacher of Germany.’ His educational reforms have had an impact on universities across Germany.
