Dmitri Mendeleev

Dmitri Mendeleev is a famous Russian chemist who is known for creating the periodic table. He studied at Heidelberg University from 1859 to 1861, where he researched topics, such as surface tension and evaporation. Furthermore, his time at Heidelberg helped him engage with famous chemists of the era. In today’s day and age, he is known as the father of chemistry.

Hannah Arendt

A famous philosopher and political theorist, Hannah Arendt studied at the University of Heidelberg under the existentialist philosopher Karl Jaspers. She completed her dissertation at the institute in 1929. Arendt’s friends at Heidelberg were linguists such as Benno von Wiese and Hugo Friedrich, and philosophers like Hans Jonas with whom she attended lectures by Friedrich Gundolf and developed an interest in German Romanticism. 

Alfred Wegener 

Alfred Wegener was a German meteorologist and geophysicist, who studied physics, meteorology, and astronomy at Heidelberg University. Furthermore, his academic time at Heidelberg helped him expand his research and led him to develop the revolutionary theory of continental drift. Even though Wegener faced scepticism during his lifetime, his work contributed to modern geology as well as climate science. 

Mileva Marić

Mileva Marić was a Serbian physicist and mathematician and was remarkably one of the first women to study mathematics and physics at a German-speaking university. Moreover, she attended Heidelberg University for a semester in the year 1897. However, Maric’s academic journey at the university had challenges as she had to get permission from each and every professor to attend their lectures; simply because she was a woman.

Max Weber

A well-known German political economist and sociologist, Max Weber, studied law and history at Heidelberg University, where he achieved his doctorate in 1889. Additionally, he later returned to teach at the university and his development of sociology and social sciences was instrumental as we know it today. Weber’s noteworthy works are The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, and they continue to construct upon current social theory and research.

Otto Frank 

Otto Frank was the father of Anne Frank who studied art history at Heidelberg University for a semester in 1908. At the German university, he befriended Nathan Straus Jr., an American student, who later had an important part in obtaining visas for his family to escape from Nazi-occupied Europe. Furthermore, in 1948 he edited and published the first edition of Anne Frank’s diary, The Diary of a Young Girl, which is even a part of school education. 

William Somerset Maugham

William Somerset Maugham was an English writer, who studied literature, philosophy, and the German language at Heidelberg University from 1891 to 1892. His literary life began in Heidelberg which led him to write his first unpublished book which was a biography of composer Giacomo Meyerbeer. Of Human Bondage is Maugham’s most famous work that is critically acclaimed. 

Philipp Melanchthon

A famous personality of the Protestant Reformation, Philipp Melanchthon, completed his degree in the arts in 1511 at Heidelberg University. He studied ancient languages and humanism which influenced his reformative work in education and theology. Melanchthon’s legacy as a scholar and educator got him the title of “Praeceptor Germaniae” which translates to ‘Teacher of Germany.’ His educational reforms have had an impact on universities across Germany.
