What is a German Student Visa?

A German student visa is valid for 3 months. During this period, the students can cover their visa with a residence permit. A residence permit is valid for 2-3 years. The duration of the course also affects the validity of the residence permit. If Indian students have completed their studies within the specified period they can also apply for visa extension.

• The applicant must have received an offer of admission from a German university/preparatory school
• The student must have sufficient funds to cover the educational costs. For example, a blocked account, or a scholarship.
• Additionally, the applicant must have purchased a student health insurance policy

• Filled out German national visa application
• Passport, and offer letter from the German University
• APS certificate (academic evaluation certificate)
• Photographs of the applicant
• Educational qualifications and certificates
• Resume/CV
• Proof of English language proficiency
• Letter of sponsorship
• Proof of funds and German health insurance coverage 

In the latest update, the German government has confirmed a modest increase in proof-of-funds requirements for the 2024/25 academic year. This has come into effect since January 1 2023 when the proof of funds threshold for student visa applicants has been set at EURO 11,208. For the coming academic year, the funds required will increase to EURO 11,904, representing about a 6% increase over the previous level.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research’s Study in Germany website explains that students can meet the funds requirement in several ways. Some of these are submitting certified documents detailing family income and assets, producing a bank guarantee, or via the use of a blocked account.

The existing German student Visa Fees or the D-visa fees are as follows. Note. To obtain this visa, applicants will have to appear for a personal interview at the German Embassy.

German Student Visa Application Process

• First, apply for the selected program in Germany
• Locate the German diplomatic mission in India. For example, VFS Global in India, the German Embassy in New Dehli, etc
•  Next, make an appointment with the German Embassy for visa submission then gather the required documents
• On the day of the visa appointment submit the visa application, and pay the required fees
• Lastly, wait for the visa application to be processed. The applicant will be contacted by the Embassy to be made aware of the visa application status 
• Once the visa application is approved the applicant can study in Germany.

However, the visa processing time can be longer for students who apply to the  German Embassy in New Delhi. The reason is, that the German Embassy in New Delhi processes more applications in India. Applications even come from Bhutanese students. The current processing time can differ based on the workload of the embassy. Therefore the visa processing time can take between  4 to 16 weeks.

Germany Student Visa Success Rate:

The German student Visa success rate is approximately 90%. It means only 10% of the students who apply for a Germany student visa are rejected. The reasons for the visa rejection can be an incomplete application, and not having sufficient funds, among others. Considering the acceptance rate, it is high that the visa application is accepted provided the applicant meets the eligibility criteria and fills out a complete application form.

How Much Bank Balance is Required for a Germany Student Visa?

A minimum bank balance is needed for a Germany student visa application. The minimum bank balance required for a German student visa is approximately  EUR 11,208 ( INR 994,864.96) per month or €134,500 per year. Generally, a student has to open a blocked bank account in Germany. Then, the money has to be deposited into this blocked bank account. Another way to make up for the fund requirement is to obtain a scholarship. 

Is Germany Expensive to Study?

Germany is not an expensive country to study. International students can find German public universities to be affordable. Those from EU/EEA countries can get free education. On the other hand, students who are not from the EU/EEA area can receive a tuition fee waiver. The tuition fee waivers granted are approximately 1,500 EUR to 3,500 EUR per semester.
