History of Coventry University

Coventry University’s history can be seen as a long tradition of excellent education providers. The roots of this university go as far back as Coventry College of Design which was established in the year 1843. It was in 1970 that Coventry College of Art joined hands with the Rugby College of Engineering Technology and Lanchester College of Technology, resulting in the creation of ‘Lanchester Polytechnic’.

In 1987 the university changed its name to Coventry Polytechnic. In the year 1992, the University came under UK Government legislation. This was laid out in the University’s Instrument and Articles of Government.

The phoenix is the logo of the university and is a mythical bird with spectacular plumage, that lives in the Arabian Desert. The fable of the phoenix goes as such: the bird lived for five to six centuries. It then burned itself to death on the funeral pyre of aromatic twigs which was ignited by the sun and awakened by its wings. The phoenix then rose from its ashes, but this time with renewed youth to live another cycle of life. This symbol is also a fitting definition of the way the city of Coventry rebuilt itself after facing devastation as the fought the Second World War.

1843

Coventry School of Design is established at a place that was previously a ribbon factory to impart core skills to the community.

1863

A School of Art building had been newly opened after looking at the growth of dedicated teaching sites.

1868

This School of Art was ranked 15th position out of 102 positions.

1887

A Technical Institute was started to elevate Coventry which was falling behind other European competitors in terms of education provision.

1902

The renamed Technical College replaces the former Technical Institute.

1929

Rugby College of Technology and Arts started as one of three institutions that were later turned into Coventry University.

1948

The birth of NHS which also gives healthcare training including midwifery and nursing.

1960

The formation of the first Students’ Union at the Lanchester College of Technology.

1965

Coventry University starts to become a leader in the field of research.

1970

City institutions merge and form Lanchester (Coventry) Polytechnic.

1990

Foundation of Coventry Business School. 

1992

Under the purview of the Further and Higher Education Act, Coventry Polytechnic converts to Coventry University.

1999

Ellen Terry building opened for the performing arts students in the former Odeon cinema.

2010

The heart of the capital city sees the opening of the Coventry University London Campus.

2014

To support student entrepreneurs, Coventry University Social Enterprise was created.

2018

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge officially open a new HLS building on Whitefriars Street.

2021

Coventry celebrated inclusion and diversity with a whole year of activities.
