One of the oldest, largest, and most respected cultural exchange organizations in the world is American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS).  Over 1.5 million young people have had access to educational and cultural activities through AIFS since it was founded in 1964. AIFS has been committed to intercultural dialogue for more than 50 years.

AIFS continues to run a wide range of programs as a social enterprise under the leadership of Chairman & CEO William L. Gertz.  AIFS maintains an organizational structure that guarantees we have the means to achieve our fundamental purpose of uniting the world—a mission dedicated to attaining favorable social results through international outreach—in new and creative ways. Description of American Institute for Foreign Study

Students participating in AIFS Study Abroad and/or Global Experiences internship programs are eligible for the scholarships listed here. These scholarships are not applicable to programs that are faculty-led and customized through your home university, although you might want to inquire about any financing that might be offered there.

Eligibility Criteria

The requirements differ for each scholarship. There are few study-abroad nations. Students must demonstrate leadership potential, complete the minimum requirements for the program to which they are applying, have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and participate in extracurricular activities that focus on intercultural or global concerns. These scholarships may be available to international students.

Types of Scholarships

Generation Study Abroad Scholarship

Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and meet the minimal prerequisites for the program to which they are applying.

AIFS Diversity Achievement Scholarship

American Institute for Foreign Study is pleased to provide specialized awards for bright students from groups who have traditionally been underrepresented in international education. Candidates must have a strong academic record and/or engage in volunteer work to be considered.

APRIL 15, 2023, BEGINS FALL SESSION 2023

October 1, 2023: Spring Semester 2024

AIFS Overseas Ambassador Scholarship

Students who are economically poor, racially or ethnically marginalized, first-generation, LGBTQIA+, disabled, students of faith, veterans, and adult students are especially encouraged to apply. The ability to blog, post photos and videos on social media, and submit a testimonial at the conclusion of the program are requirements for applicants. These resources will be disseminated via the blog and social media platforms of AIFS. Recipients who do not graduate are urged to enroll in our Alumni Ambassador program so they can continue to educate their peers about their experiences.

Fall 2023 Semester: Apr 15, 2023

HACU-AIFS Scholarship

Up to 50% off the program fee for the semester or summer. Awards will be presented alongside the advisory board of the HACU (Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities).  

Hispanic students enrolled in HACU member institutions are eligible.

John S. Linakis Scholarship

Students with inadequate financial resources who exhibit an interest in and commitment to social justice are eligible for AIFS.

October 1, 2023 (Spring Semester 2024) *Applicable to study abroad programs. 

Maynooth University Scholarship

Eligibility: After completing your program, if you are chosen as the successful winner of this award, you must submit a brief essay to AIFS. This paragraph should represent the goals you had for the program before you enrolled in it and provide an overview of the benefits you believe you have received, both personally and academically. Additionally, you are welcome to include any additional program-related experiences you have and would like to share with others.

Application Process

Students need to go through the following general steps in order to enroll in BFA Fashion Design:
