What are the Common Nouns?
Common Nouns are words that identify common objects/things rather than particular ones. As per the Cambridge Dictionary, a common noun is defined as a noun that is used in naming a group of objects. This could include “table”, “book”, etc. It is not used in naming a single person, place, thing or idea. Several examples of common nouns include teachers, books, boys, towns, etc.
Types of Common Nouns
To move ahead with the examples, you must know the types of common nouns and how they are used in sentences. Let’s explore the types of common nouns one by one.
Countable Common Noun
As the name suggests, countable common nouns can be counted or measured. They consist of individual people, things, animals or ideas. They have both singular and plural forms, such as book/books, apple/apples, or chair/chairs. You can use numbers and the articles a or an with them. Some of the examples are
- Five trees were planted in the garden today.
- Paris is situated 100 miles away.
Uncountable Common Noun
Uncountable common nouns are the exact opposite of countable nouns. They have to count in quantities rather than numbers. They don’t have a plural form and cannot be used with numbers. Words like water, milk, rice, advice, and information are uncountable. Instead of numbers, we use quantity words such as some, a little, or a piece of. Some of the examples are
- A herd of cows are grazing on the farm.

Collective Collmon Noun
A collective common noun refers to a group of people, animals, or things considered as one unit. It usually names a general one. These nouns represent collections acting together, like team, family, crowd, herd, committee, or class. Even though the group has many members, the collective noun is treated as a single idea in most sentences. Some of the examples include:
- The bench of judges has given its verdict on the murder case.
- The cricket was congratulated by the Prime Minister of India.
Concrete Common Noun
A concrete common noun is the thing that can be seen, touched, smelled, heard, or tasted. These are physical objects that exist in the real world. They are general ones like chair, apple, dog, river, book, or flower. Since they can be experienced through the senses, they are called “concrete,” and because they are general, they are “common.” Some of the examples include:
- The cheese is stale now.
- I watched the movie on my mobile phone.
