The terms Bhai and Dooj together form the literal meaning of Bhai Phota or Bhai Dooj. ‘Bhai’ means brother, and ‘Dooj’ is the second day following the new moon’s rise. As a result, Bhai Dooj is observed on the second day following the Diwali festival.

Why Bhai Dooj is Celebrated?

There are no manuscripts that provide the official history of Bhai Dooj’s inception. On the day that is now known as Diwali, it is thought that Lord Krishna visited his sister Subhadra and was greeted by her by donning a tilak on his forehead after killing the demon Narakasura. Since then, this day has been celebrated as Bhai Dooj.

According to another piece of mythology, Yamaraja, the god of death, paid a visit to his sister Yami on this day. She greeted him with flowers and put tilak on his forehead. The lord of death gave her a gift in return that showed how much he cared for her.

Which God is Worshipped on Bhai Dooj?

Early in the morning, devotees bathe before worshipping Yama, Lord Ganesha, Chitragupta, Yamuna, and the numerous messengers of Yama. Numerous mantras are sung in conjunction with idol worship.

After worshipping God, sisters decorate a puja thali for their brothers. A diya is also lit by the sisters to perform the Bhai Dooj rituals.

How to Celebrate Bhai Dooj?

For their brothers, and sisters organise a special puja on Bhratri Dwitiya or Holi Bhai Dooj. To commemorate the day, they apply a tilak to their brother’s forehead, give him candy, and perform aarti.

In exchange, brothers offer their sisters gifts and shield them from the world’s dangers. The holiday is also observed in order to ask God for his blessings on a prosperous and happy life.
