‘Dr Ambedkar turned everyday discrimination in India into a revolution. He was disgusted with the way Dalits were treated in India. This rebellious boy soon turned into a gifted student. Dr Ambedkar earned degrees from Columbia University and the London School of Economics. His favourites were sociology, philosophy, economics, and history.’

‘It was his education prowess which defined him as a man who believed in logic and rationality. Most social reformers of his time used religion to oppose discrimination, including Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi used the word ‘Harijans’ to describe Dalits; it meant Children of God.’

Dr Ambedkar was a civil servant, par excellence. Today, the Indian Civil Services is mired in inefficiency and corruption; it is not a service anymore, it has become a job. He participated in all three Round Table Conferences in London from 1930-32, was appointed as the first Law Minister of Independent India, and even drafted the Indian Constitution.’

Dr Ambedkar was a feminist icon as well. He once remarked, ‘I measure the progress of a community by the degree of progress which women have achieved.’ Dr. Ambedkar was a man who fought for justice, not just for Dalits, but also for women, the elderly, and the poor.

‘Unfortunately, today Dalit leaders have appropriated him in India. They have reduced him to a picture on billboards. So, on this Ambedkar Jayanti, let’s all learn from this ‘Maker of Modern India’, ‘A Beacon of Social Justice’, and ‘A True Leader’.

Thank you.’
