In India, there are 22 officially recognized languages spoken in different parts of the country. Hindi is the most spoken language in India, with a total of 528 million speakers.’

‘There is no national language in India. Although the Indian Constitution states that Hindi is the official language of the Union of India, written in Devanagari script. A lot of people do not understand the difference between the official and national languages. Hindi is one of the official languages, along with English. It means Hindi can be used for all government business, such as the national court, parliament, or business purposes.’

‘The idea to make Hindi the official language of India was given by Dayanand Saraswati or Mulshankar for the first time in the 19th century. This idea gained momentum during the national struggle, when the Hindi newspaper, magazine, and political parties raised the banner to declare Hindi as the national language of India.’

‘During the formation of the Indian Constitution, there was a debate to make Hindi the national language of India. This idea was opposed by leaders like EV Ramaswamy, Periyar, and other non-Hindi speakers. After long debates and strong opposition, it was concluded that Hindi in Devanagari script would be the official language of the union. This was mentioned in Article 343 of the Indian Constitution.’

Today, more than 525 million people in India speak Hindi, making it the fourth most spoken language in the world. Just because Hindi is the most spoken language in India does not mean to declare it the national language. 

In our Constitution, 22 languages have been officially recognized. To record the number of language speakers in each part of the country, the Department of Official Language was set up in 1975 as an independent department of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

A lot of people are determined to make Hindi the national language of India. Even parents, teachers, and educational institutions force children to learn English, as it is the most spoken language in the world. This idea of inflicting another language on children or people of other countries can damage their own cultural identity.
