The full form of NIPUN is the National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy. The NIPUN Bharat program was introduced nationwide by the Ministry of Education on 5 July 2021. It was started to help kids acquire fundamental skills at the end of third grade. This goal is estimated to be achieved by 2026-2027.

The National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeray is a national intiative by the Ministry of Education. With this program, the government aims to achieve foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) in primary schools by 2026-27.
In simpler words, NIPUN Bharat Mission aims to make sure that every by the time they end Class 3, every child in India can:
- Read with understanding
- Write
- Perform basic maths
- Learn basic life sills
The mission believes that if a child learns to read by Class 3, they can read to learn in the future. This ‘universal acquisition of foundational learning skills’ is the highest priority of the school education in the NIPUN Bharat Mission, and the goal is to create an environment where it is possible.
The NIPUN Bharat mission will meet the educational needs of children aged between 3 and 9. It is designed to support and inspire kids as well as their schools, instructors, parents, and communities to assist our children in reaching their full potential and advance the nation.

Foundational Literacy and Numeracy in NIPUN Bharat Mission
FLN in NIPUN Bharat Mission is divided in two parts — Literacy and Numeracy, which are further divided into different components.
Components of Foundational Literacy

Learning Goals of NIPUN Bharat
NIPUN Bharat Mission has stated its learning goals for achieving FLN by Grade 3. These are clearly defined outcomes expected by each grade.
