The full form of SD is Secure Digital. A Secure Digital (SD) Card is a type of non-volatile memory card. The SD Card Association (SDA) created SD cards for use in portable devices and popular storage media such as mobile phones and digital cameras.

In August 1999, SanDisk, Panasonic (Matsushita Electric), and Toshiba introduced a standard as an enhancement over Multi Media Cards (MMC) that has since become the industry standard. SD-3C, LLC was founded by the three firms to licence and protect intellectual property rights linked with SD memory cards, SD host and other devices.

In January 2000, the firms also established the SD Association (SDA), a non-profit organisation, to promote and develop SD Card standards. SDA now has almost 1,000 member companies. Secure Digital offers five card families in three different sizes. The five families are Standard-Capacity (SDSC), High-Capacity (SDHC), Extended-Capacity (SDXC), Ultra-Capacity (SDUC), and SDIO, which combines input/output functions with data storage.
Market
These digital cards are an efficient way to store several GBs of information/data in a very small size. Because of their tiny size, memory cards are employed in a variety of electronic gadgets. Larger memory cards are also available. Cameras, video game consoles, and camcorders are examples of such gadgets. Because these devices require frequent memory card input and output, larger-sized memory cards are more appropriate. Due to their compact size, microSD cards are used in phones, camera drones, and action cameras.
Embedded System
The SDA standardised Embedded SD in 2008 to enable non-removable SD-style devices on printed circuit boards. This technology “leverag[e] well-known SD standards.” However, the MMC standard became the de facto standard for embedded systems, despite the fact that the industry did not accept it. SanDisk sells such integrated memory components as iNAND.
Most modern microcontrollers include SPI logic that allows them to connect with an SD card in SPI mode and provide non-volatile storage. Bit hammering can replicate SPI capabilities even if a microcontroller lacks it.
