History of PEN International

PEN International has a rich history that goes back to 1921 when it was established in London, United Kingdom. Over the years, this organization has evolved into a global organization and made a significant impact on the literary world. Since then, it has expanded its operations with 147 Centres located in around five continents and over 100 countries.

While the entire world was scared of censorship, PEN International emerged in the aftermath of World War 1. It was founded by a group of prominent writers such as John Galsworthy, George Bernard Shaw, and H. H. Wells. Their sole aim was to establish an organization that promotes international solidarity among writers and literary freedom. After all, writers often find themselves at the forefront of struggles against oppression, violations, and censorship.
