The founder of the Lodi dynasty (1451-1526), an Afghan-origin dynasty is Bahlul Lodhi. It is known to be the last ruling family of the Delhi Sultanate of India. Bahlul ruled the dynasty from 1451 to 1489 and he is known to be one of the most powerful and influential Punjab chiefs. There have been three rulers of the Lodi dynasty- Bahlol Lodi, Sikandar Lodi, and Ibrahim Lodi. This Lodi dynasty takes its name from an Afghan-based tribe, Lodi, as the name of the ruler and the dynasty suggests.

Bahlul was from the clan Shahu Khel and belonged to a Pashtun family, an important branch of Afghans. His uncle, Islam Khan, governor of the Sayyid Dynasty ruler (Khizr Khan) took him in 1419 and brought up him. It was after the death of his uncle that Bahlul Lodhi became the governor of Sarhind. One of his main mottoes, when he was working there, was to restore the importance of Afghans and Sultans that was long lost.

Rule of Bahlul Lodhi
Bahlul Lodi, the founder of the Lodi dynasty was able to defeat the last king of the Sayyid Dynasty in 1451. When Sayyid Dynasty was prevalent and Muhammad Shah was under the rule, he was the governor of Lahore and Sirhind. Bahlul was the core of the strength of the Lodhi dynasty. He proved his worth as a leader throughout his time in the Lodi dynasty.

As mentioned above, Lodhi was a worthy leader, and he left enough for his successor, Sikandar Lodi to rule and conquer.
In 1489, Bahlul was announced dead somewhere around the outskirts of the town of Jalali. In Delhi, there is a very famous shrine of Sufi Saint, Hazrat Nasiruddin Mahmud Chiragh-Dehlavi, called Chirag-e-Delhi, Bahlul’s tomb is located there only.
