The first Vice President of India was Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who held the office from January 26, 1952 to May 13, 1962. First Vice President Of India And His Contribution
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhkrishnan was born on September 5, 1888, in a small town in Tamil Nadu.
- He went on to pursue a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Madras.
- Furthermore, he went on to study at the University of Oxford, where he deepened his knowledge of Eastern and Western philosophy.
- Dr. Radhakrishnan began his career as a philosophy lecturer and became a renowned scholar in the field.
- He also served as the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University and later as the Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University.
- Dr. Radhakrishnan’s profound knowledge and expertise in philosophy led him to be appointed as the first Vice President of India in 1952, under the leadership of Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India.

His Role as Vice- President
As the first Vice President of India, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan played an important role in the functioning of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament.
- He presided over the Rajya Sabha with great dignity and upheld the democratic values of the Indian Constitution.
- He advocated for the promotion of learning and intellectual development among the youth.
- He was conferred with the prestigious Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to society and academia.
Dr Radhakrishnan’s birthday, September 5th, is celebrated as Teacher’s Day in India, in honour of his dedication to the field of education and his belief in the transformative power of knowledge. He also later went on to become the Second President of India.
