What is the Full Form of ICCW?

The full form of ICCW is the Indian Council for Child Welfare. The Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) is an apex body that works to promote and protect the rights of children in India. Founded in 1952, the ICCW is a member of the International Union for Child Welfare and is affiliated with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The main objectives of ICCW are to protect and promote the children’s welfare in India. The council intends to work towards the all-round development of the children and ensure their participation in all areas of life. The council also aims to create a child-friendly environment in the country.

History

In order to safeguard children’s fundamental rights and improve their quality of life, the Indian Council for Child Welfare was established in New Delhi in 1952. The Freedom Fighter Smt. Manjubashini served as the founding secretary of the Tamil Nadu branch and the state health minister served as president when it was established in 1953. 

Stalwarts like Mrs Ammu Swaminathan were a part of the TN Council’s initial committee. Mrs Ellen Sharma, Mrs Mary Clubwalla Jadhav, Mrs Sarojini Varadappan, and Sri. S.R. Venkataraman.

The Council started on a fast expansion path in the late 1970s, taking up a variety of tasks that were initially funded by the Central and State Governments and are now, to a greater extent, coming from outside sources. Additionally, the Council relocated to its own space in Shenoy Nagar, which was built on land provided by the State Government. The building was built with public donations and grant money.

The fact that its yearly budget, which was less than INR 50,000 in 1973, has increased 200-fold since then might be used to gauge the pace of its growth.

How ICCW Works?

The ICCW functions in close collaboration with numerous Ministries in India, State Governments, and other organisations working for the development of children. The body also has a network of child welfare committees at the district and taluka levels. 

The ICCW functions via its headquarters in New Delhi and four Regional offices in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Bhubaneshwar.
