Origin of ERNET

The Department of Electronics (DoE) launched ERNET in 1986 with financial support from the Government of India and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Eight leading institutions participated in the project:

1. IISc (Indian Institute of Science) Bangalore
2. Five IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) at Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur, Kharagpur and Madras
3. NCST (National Centre for Software Technology) [Now CDAC] Bombay
4. The DoE, New Delhi

ERNET started as a network that supported both TCP/IP and OSI -IP protocols over the leased-line part of the backbone. However, since 1995, almost all the traffic uses TCP/IP.
