The full form of ENIAC stands for Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer. It was designed and developed by a team of engineers at the University of Pennsylvania, J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly. The word ‘computer’ is used as it stores the data and instructions related to digital processing and it can also perform various functions automatically without any need of human intervention. The word ‘Integrator’ is used as it can provide numerical solutions to a complex set of problems.

The first digital computer, known as ABC and created by John Vincent Atanasoff and Clifford Berry in 1945, was patented in 1973. It was an experimental tool for employing binary arithmetic to solve systems of linear equations. The primary issue with ABC was how incredibly slow and power-hungry it was. In order to create a machine that would be far quicker than those being created at Harvard University, the Moore School of Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, John von Neumann and other researchers at Princeton University proposed a new design in June 1946. They did this by using an electronic stored-program technology.
To address a challenge in the realm of aeronautics, the ENIAC was created. The issue was that a lot of aeroplanes were lost because they couldn’t calculate their coordinates and determine their location. At the time, no other machine could perform more calculations per second than the ENIAC. In addition to tens of thousands of resistors and capacitors, it had approximately 3,000 vacuum tubes and several million transistors, which together produced about 18,000 valves and switches. The United States Air Force has an ENIAC programme that can solve differential equations for navigation systems.

Importance of ENIAC
ENIAC was created to provide aid during World War 2. Since it was invented at a point in history when inventions and advancements were fundamentally changing the world, this discovery had far-reaching ramifications. Industrial automation was revolutionised by computers, which also led to the centralization of power and transformed human society by generating countless new employment. Mathematics, physics, economics, music, and the arts were among the many other sectors that benefited from it. Invented in 1937 was the first computer.
