dma full form

The DMA full form comes in handy when you are interested in computer systems and how they work. But what does the term DMA stand for and what does it do? In this blog, we will explain the full form of DMA, its functions, advantages, and disadvantages. Read on to know more!

DMA Full Form

The full form of DMA is Direct Memory Access, a feature that allows certain hardware devices to access the main system memory independently of the central processing unit (CPU). This means that the devices can read or write data directly to or from the memory, without involving the CPU in the process. This can speed up memory operations and reduce the CPU overhead.

How Does DMA Work?

To use DMA, a computer system needs a special hardware device called a DMA controller (DMAC), which generates memory addresses and initiates memory read or write cycles. The DMAC has several registers that are written and read by the CPU, like a memory address register, a byte count register, and a control register, specifying the source, destination, direction, size, and number of bytes to transfer in one operation.

To perform a DMA operation:

  1. The CPU first initializes the DMAC with the required information, such as the memory address, byte count, and control mode.
  2. Then the CPU releases the control of the system bus to the DMAC, which takes over the data transfer. The CPU can perform other tasks while the data transfer is in progress.
  3. When the data transfer is complete, the DMAC sends an interrupt signal to the CPU, which resumes control of the system bus.

DMA Full Form: Advantages

DMA has several advantages compared to other methods of data transfer, such as programmed I/O and interrupt-driven I/O. Some of them are:

  • DMA can transfer data faster than the CPU can keep up with it or when the CPU needs to perform other tasks while waiting for a slow I/O device.
  • DMA can reduce the clock cycles and CPU overhead required for data transfer.
  • DMA can distribute the workload between the CPU and the I/O devices more efficiently.
