The full form of BDO is Block Development Officer. A BDO is in charge of a block for its development and activities. He/she is responsible for supervising the execution of all the programs related to the planning and development of the blocks. The idea is to keep a check on all the concerned authorities and see if the plans are executed properly.
Responsibilities of a BDO
- Storing and distributing the agricultural supplies
- Attending Gram Sabha and Panchayat Samiti meetings
- Participating in social campaigns
- Disbursing funds out of the Panchayat Samiti Fund
- Eliminating irregularities related to Panchayat Samiti Fund
- Ensuring construction projects undertaken by the Panchayat are done on time
- Preparing the annual budget and sharing it with the Panchayat Samiti
- Creating progress reports and sharing them with Panchayat Samiti as well as with the Zila Parishad and the State Govt.
- Examining the financial standing of the Panchayats on behalf of the Panchayat Samiti, paying particular attention to the collection of taxes, loan repayment, and maintenance of regular accounting.
- Assisting Panchayats in developing strategies and ensuring that they follow the priorities and plans of the Panchayat Samiti.
Eligibility to Become a BDO
Educational qualifications | Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 50% marks |
Age limit | General- 32 years OBC- 35 years SC/ST- 27 years |
Physical requirements | Physically fit and capable of performing the duties of a BDO. |
Nationality | Indian |
Other requirements | Must be a resident of the state in which you are applying for the BDO role. |
How to Become a BDO?
- Can be from any background (Humanities, Science or Commerce)
- Must be a graduate of a reputed university
- Take the state-level civil services examination. The exam is usually conducted by the Public Service Commission of the state in which you wish to work as a BDO
- Qualify for the exam and take the interview round
- Complete any training program if required
