University of Virginia (U.Va or UVA) is a public research university located in Charlottesville, Virginia which was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding fathers and the third President of the United States of America. It is a public university designed to advance human knowledge, educate leaders and cultivate an informed citizenry. The University of Virginia offers an affordable, world-class education that is consistently ranked among the nation’s best. When the University of Virginia was founded in 1819, a library instead of a chapel – was placed at its center. By today’s standards, this seems common practice. The university sits on a historic 1,135-acre (1.8 sq mi; 459.3 ha) central campus partially protected by UNESCO. The UVA campus is commonly known as the Grounds. The campus straddles the border between the city of Charlottesville and Albemarle County. The UVA Library collects, preserves, organizes, and shares materials of all varieties, providing unfettered access to an accumulation of knowledge, two centuries in the making.
