University of Virginia (U.Va or UVA) is a public research university located in Charlottesville, Virginia which was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding fathers and the third President of the United States of America. It is a public university designed to advance human knowledge, educate leaders and cultivate an informed citizenry. The University of Virginia offers an affordable, world-class education that is consistently ranked among the nation’s best. When the University of Virginia was founded in 1819, a library instead of a chapel – was placed at its center. By today’s standards, this seems common practice. But at a time when universities were structured around the church, this was radical. University of Virginia’s sports team plays at NCAA Division I FBS-ACC, while it has academic affiliations with AAU, ORAU, URA, SURA, Sea Grant and Space Grant. 

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

The university sits on a historic 1,135-acre (1.8 sq mi; 459.3 ha) central campus partially protected by UNESCO. The UVA campus is commonly known as the Grounds. It is known for its Jeffersonian architecture and place in U.S. history as a model for college and university campuses throughout the country. The campus straddles the border between the city of Charlottesville and Albemarle County. The University of Virginia has 12 libraries that remain central in its mission to advance human knowledge, educate leaders and cultivate an informed citizenry. The UVA Library collects, preserves, organizes, and shares materials of all varieties, providing unfettered access to an accumulation of knowledge, two centuries in the making. 

The University of Virginia has 12 schools :- College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences , Darden School of Business, Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, McIntire School of Commerce, School of Architecture, School of Continuing & Professional Studies, School of Data Science, School of Education and Human Development, School of Engineering and Applied Science, School of Law, School of Medicine and School of Nursing, all offering over a 100 courses.
