History, Affiliations and Rankings

University of Virginia (U.Va or UVA) is a public research university located in Charlottesville, Virginia which was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding fathers and the third President of the United States of America. It is a public university designed to advance human knowledge, educate leaders and cultivate an informed citizenry. The University of Virginia offers an affordable, world-class education that is consistently ranked among the nation’s best. When the University of Virginia was founded in 1819, a library instead of a chapel – was placed at its center. By today’s standards, this seems common practice. But at a time when universities were structured around the church, this was radical. University of Virginia’s sports team plays at NCAA Division I FBS-ACC, while it has academic affiliations with AAU, ORAU, URA, SURA, Sea Grant and Space Grant.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

The university sits on a historic 1,135-acre (1.8 sq mi; 459.3 ha) central campus partially protected by UNESCO. The UVA campus is commonly known as the Grounds. It is known for its Jeffersonian architecture and place in U.S. history as a model for college and university campuses throughout the country. The campus straddles the border between the city of Charlottesville and Albemarle County. The University of Virginia has 12 libraries that remain central in its mission to advance human knowledge, educate leaders and cultivate an informed citizenry. The UVA Library collects, preserves, organizes, and shares materials of all varieties, providing unfettered access to an accumulation of knowledge, two centuries in the making.

The University of Virginia has 12 schools :- College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences , Darden School of Business, Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, McIntire School of Commerce, School of Architecture, School of Continuing & Professional Studies, School of Data Science, School of Education and Human Development, School of Engineering and Applied Science, School of Law, School of Medicine and School of Nursing, all offering over a 100 courses.

Accomplishments and Alumni

The University is an iconic public institution of higher education, boasting nationally ranked schools and programs, diverse and distinguished faculty, a major academic medical center and proud history as a renowned research university. The community and culture of the University are enriched by active student self-governance, sustained commitment to the arts and a robust NCAA Division I Athletics program. Notable Alumni from University of Virginia include Edgar Allan Poe(American Writer), Kyle Guy(American Professional Basketball Player), Steve Huffman(CEO of Reddit), Harmeet Dhillon(Lawyer), Sean Patrick Thomas(Actor) and Melissa Stark(American TV Personality).

Part-Time Job Rules for International Students in the USA

  • When school is in session, your US student visa permits you to work up to 20 hours per week on campus and full-time during school breaks (up to 40 hours per week).

  • The employer must ensure that the employment should not displace (take a job away from) a US resident.

  • F1 students are permitted to work in the United States, but only under specified circumstances and in compliance with the US Citizenship and Immigration Service's complicated standards and restrictions (USCIS).

  • Many US colleges need approval from the International Student Office before taking any on-campus job, and such employment may not be permitted during a student's first semester or year.

Types of Part-Time Jobs in the USA

There are two ways international students can get part-time jobs in the USA. They can either look for on-campus jobs or off-campus jobs.

On-Campus Jobs: On-campus employment is defined as work that takes place on campus or at a school-affiliated off-campus site. Some examples are working in a campus bookshop, cafeteria, or other facilities where students may assist. To be considered for this position, you must apply at least 30 days prior to the start of school. Speak with your DSO about applying. If you're authorised, your DSO will provide you with a letter of approval, which you'll need to apply for a Social Security number (SSN).

Off-Campus Jobs: Off-campus jobs are relatively easy but not always in proximity. F1 students can gain authorization to work under certain training programmes. This form of part-time work is not difficult to acquire. However, it is only available to F1 students who have completed at least one full academic year of their programme of study and who have an economic hardship that meets the Department of Homeland Security's urgent conditions. Optional Practical Training (OPT) and Curricular Practical Training (CPT) are two programmes designed specifically for students who want to obtain experience in their field of study.
