The University of Jyväskylä is a research university established in 1934. It was initially the first Finnish-speaking teacher training college, Jyväskylä Teacher Seminary founded by Uno Cygnaeus, known to be the father of the Finnish Primary School System. The university offers academic education under 7 faculties namely Humanities and Social Sciences, Information Technology, Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics, Education and Psychology, Sport and Health Sciences and Mathematics and Science. There are several independent institutes which form a part of the university. One such institute called the JYU Open University in Finland specifically delivers online courses to adult learners in Finnish. Other independent institutes include the Open Science Centre, Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius, Finnish Institute for Educational Research and the Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication. The university works on research, education and development projects in collaborations with international companies, municipalities and other institutes while locally with the city of Jyväskylä in order to promote growth and development. There is a distinct student services section on the campus which ensures the security of student needs.
