History, Affiliations and Rankings

Established in 1580 by Peter Canisius on the foundation of the Jesuit College St. Michel. The cantonal library founded in 1839 has collaborated with the university and the Academy came to be known as the Faculty of Law. In 1939, the University of Fribourg moved to a new campus built on the cemetery of Misericorde, giving St. Michel one of Fribourg's gymnasia, which later took the name of College St. Michel. The University of Fribourg has affiliations with BeNeFri;  Compostela Group of Universities. The University of Fribourg ranks #561-570 by the QS World University Rankings 2022 and #401–500th World University Rankings 2022 by the Times Higher Education. 

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

The University of Fribourg has no main campus and its buildings are situated throughout the city. The central sites are Misericorde - Humanities and central administration (including the famous Senate room), Perolles - Science, Perolles 2 - Economics & Social Sciences, Regina Mundi - Psychology, BCU centrale - Main Library, Pierre Aeby - Department of Classical Philology, Bonnes Fontaines - Pedagogy and Stade St. Leonard - University Stadium. The Fribourg University has five departments: the faculty of humanities, the faculty of law, the faculty of theology, and the faculty of science and medicine.

Accomplishments and Alumni 

The notable alumni of the institute are Patrick Aebischer, former president of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Pietro Balestra, a Swiss economist specialising in econometrics and Hans Wolfgang Brachinger, German mathematician and econometrician.

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

The University of Fribourg values diversity in all its dimensions. The University has more than 10,000 students enrolments, with more than 1,150 faculty within the premises. They have more than 1,700 international students on campus. The male to female ratio is 40:60 at the University of Fribourg making it a fairly gender-balanced university. Some of the leading recruiters at this institute are Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs, Deloitte, and others.
