History, Affiliations and Rankings
CU Denver is one of four campuses that make up the University of Colorado system. The university began in 1912 as an extension of the University of Colorado Boulder. In 1973, it became an independent campus, and the University of Colorado Denver was officially founded. In 2023, the university will celebrate its 50th anniversary. The University of Colorado Denver is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), which is part of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). The HLC is recognized by the US Department of Education (USDE) to accredit degree-granting higher education institutions.

Accomplishments and Alumni
For the fiscal year 2020-21, CU's operating budget is $4.1 billion. Nearly half of the university's revenue comes from contracts and grants, as well as tuition and fees. Instruction, research, and health services provide up the majority of CU's expenditures. In FY 2019-20, CU researchers received over $1.4 billion in research funds and contributions to advance knowledge, develop businesses, and stimulate discovery and innovation. This represents the university's mission of providing classroom education, research training, and community outreach. The university has a prestigious alumni network of over 100,000 globally out of which 67% resides in Colorado.
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
The total student enrollment in Denver is 15,162 students. At CU Denver, the student community is diverse and vibrant, with people from all walks of life. CU offers a range of opportunities for students to get involved in various interest groups, all of which are founded and maintained by students. 14% nonresident students at the university are International students who come from 66 different countries. With students of colour making up 42% of the student body, CU Denver is the most diverse research university in Colorado. In the last 25 years, CU innovation has spawned 190 firms, placing it in the top 5% of universities nationwide for university business startups, at No. 18 out of 349.
