About the University

History, Affiliations and Rankings

After the Charles University of Prague (1348), the University of Vienna (1365), and the Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg, the University of Cologne was founded in 1388 as the Holy Roman Empire's fourth university (1386). On January 6, 1389, the university began classes. The French First Republic, which had conquered Cologne in 1794, abolished the university in 1798. The Prussian government-backed the Cologne City Council's intention to re-establish the university in 1919. The charter of the modern university was signed by Cologne Mayor Konrad Adenauer on May 29, 1919. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and the Cologne-Rotterdam EMBA have both certified the University of Cologne Business School. All of the university's other courses have been approved by higher authorities. The Times Higher Education positioned the university at #172nd in the World University Rankings. Cologne is #201+ in the European Teaching Rankings 2018. The University of Cologne secured the ranking of #=311 in the QS World University Rankings.
