Founded in 1869, Purdue University is named after Lafayette businessman John Purdue who donated land and money to establish a college that will teach science, technology, and agriculture. The very first classes were held on September 16, 1874, with six instructors and 39 students on campus. A locomotive and a Corliss steam engine, one of the most effective engines at the time, were both tested in Purdue's engineering laboratories. Through its cooperative extension services, the School of Agriculture disseminated its research to farmers across the state. Over the next 20 years, the school would experience a period of expansion. A short-lived school of medicine was quickly followed by programmes in education and home economics. Purdue had the highest undergraduate engineering enrollment in the nation by 1925, and it would maintain that position for the next 50 years.U.S. News & World Report ranked Purdue University the 5th most innovative national university, and it was also tied for the 17th best public university in the United States, 53rd overall, and 114th best globally. Purdue University is also rated 36th in "Best Undergraduate Teaching, 83rd in "Best Value Schools", and 284th in "Top Performers on Social Mobility", and the undergraduate engineering program tied for 9th at schools whose highest degree is a doctorate.
